RoRo vs Container Shipping: What's Best for Your Car?

May 2, 2026 5 min read

Roll-on/Roll-off is cheaper. Container is safer. Here's how to choose the right method for your import.

RoRo (Roll-on / Roll-off) Vehicles are driven onto a dedicated car-carrier vessel. Cheaper, faster booking, and available to most major ports. Best for standard road-going vehicles.

Container Vehicle is loaded into a 20ft or 40ft container (1 to 4 cars). Higher cost but offers protection from weather and tampering, allows shipping of spare parts inside the car, and serves ports without RoRo terminals.

Cost difference RoRo to Mombasa: ~USD 1,300. Container (shared 40ft): ~USD 1,800. Container (sole use): ~USD 3,500.

Our recommendation Use RoRo for vehicles under USD 25,000. Use container for classics, sports cars, and any vehicle going to a port without RoRo service.
