How to Import Used Cars from Japan: Complete 2026 Guide

June 1, 2026 9 min read

A step-by-step buyer's guide covering auction sourcing, inspection, shipping, duties, and clearance for first-time importers.

Japan exports more than a million used vehicles every year to over 100 countries. The combination of strict roadworthy ("shaken") tests, low average mileage, and a well-developed auction ecosystem makes Japan the world's most reliable source of quality second-hand cars.

1. Choose the right vehicle Start by checking your country's import rules: steering side (RHD vs LHD), maximum vehicle age, and emission standards. Then shortlist models that match your budget and use-case — Toyota Probox and Hilux for commercial work, Toyota Aqua and Honda Fit for fuel economy, Land Cruiser and Prado for off-road.

2. Find a trusted exporter Verify the exporter is a JUMVEA member, has a real Japan office, and can show auction sheets for every car. JVS Global is a JUMVEA-registered exporter based in Nagoya since 2008.

3. Reserve and pay Once you confirm a vehicle, a proforma invoice is issued on CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) basis to your port. Pay by international wire transfer to the exporter's corporate bank account.

4. Pre-shipment inspection Most African, Caribbean and Asian markets require pre-shipment inspection by JEVIC, QISJ, EAA or BIVAC. The inspection covers roadworthiness, mileage verification, and radiation testing.

5. Shipping Vehicles are loaded on weekly RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessels from Yokohama, Nagoya, Kobe or Hakata. Container shipping is used for high-value cars or non-RoRo destinations.

6. Documents You will receive: original Bill of Lading, Export Certificate (Deregistration), Inspection Certificate, Commercial Invoice, and (where required) translated documents.

7. Clearance at your port Engage a licensed clearing agent. Pay import duty, excise, VAT, and any environmental levies. Collect your vehicle and register it locally.

Tip: always check the auction sheet grade (4, 4.5, 5 = excellent) and the "R" mark (repaired) before committing.
